The Henry Moore Foundation - Art Trip 2025

Some of the children in Year 4 and 5 were extremely lucky to take part in a sculpture workshop at The Henry Moore Studios and Gardens in Hertfordshire. The children watched a short video to learn about the artist and the creation of the Henry Moore foundation before being challenged, in groups, to create a sculpture using foam pieces of different shapes and sizes. All groups worked well as a team to create three completely different sculptures.

Out in the garden, the children viewed some of the artist's sculptures and were encouraged to use their imaginations to think about the form and what it could represent. On their return to the studio, the children chose one of the natural objects on offer - a stone, a twig or a shell - which they studied to complete a 2D drawing. They then added to the shape and used shading to add depth to turn their sketch into a 3D drawing.

The children had fun (and got very messy!) adding terracotta clay to their natural objects to create a small sculpture. They were given the opportunity to recreate their sculpture on a larger scale or create a new sculpture using their imaginations.

Quoted below are some of the children's reflections about the experience.

"I enjoyed the freedom of making my own clay sculpture and learning about Henry Moore and his artwork." Lola

"I enjoyed looking in Henry Moore's studio and seeing the smaller models he made before creating his large sculptures." Annie

"My favourite part was making my own sculpture out of clay. It was a good experience but very messy!" Khaleesi

"I liked the setting of the Henry Moore Foundation and looking inside the artist's studios. I made a sculpture of a man sitting on a rock which was inspired by Henry Moore's figurative work." George
